matter and measurement
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| solids | tightly packed, little motion, fixed shape/volume |
| liquids | loosely packed, medium amount of motion, fixed volume but no shape |
| gasses | very far apart, lots of motion, no fixed volume/shape |
| pure substances | elements or compounds |
| elements | pure substance that can't be broken down into simpler substances |
| compounds | pure substances made of 2+ elements that are chemically combined |
| mixtures | combinations of pure substances- homogeneous and heterogeneous |
| homogeneous | solution- uniform throughout the entire sample |
| heterogeneous | not uniform throughout the entire |
| physical properties | properties of matter that can be observed without changing composition- color, odor, hardness |
| chemical properties | properties of matter that can be observed thru a change in composition- flammability, reactivity |
| physical changes | change that doesn't end in the formation of a new substance (rip paper), often reversible |
| chemical changes | change that ends in the formation of a new substance (burn paper = soot) |
