| third person | Someone outside the story is telling it; "s/he" |
| narrator | a person who tells the story |
| characterization | the method a writer uses to develop a character |
| major character | plays a large role in the story; main character |
| protagonist | the central character or hero of the story |
| antagonist | the force working against the main character/ hero |
| simile | a comparison of 2 separate things using like or as |
| connotation | the idea and feeling associated with a word (positive, negative, neutral) |
| allusion | a reference to another piece of literature or art within a story |
| foreshadowing | when an author provides hints that predict future events in a story |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonants in a phrase or line |
| metaphor | the comparison of one thing to another without like or as |
| theme | the underlying meaning or message of a literary work |
| personification | non-living things are given human traits |
| hyperbole | exaggerated statements not meant to be taken literally |
| idiom | expression that carries a non literal meaning |
