| FEDERALISTS | Supported the ratification of the new U.S. Constitution & a stronger central government |
| ANTI FEDERALISTS | Opposed (against) ratification of the new U.S. Constitution, thought it would take too many rights away from the citizens |
| THE U.S. CONSTITUTION | the document that lays out the principles of American government, establishes the form and system of government, and serves as the supreme law of the land |
| REPUBLIC | A form of government where the PEOPLE rule. Citizens vote for leaders, and the representatives respond to the needs of the public |
| FEDERALISM | The division of power between the national government and state governments |
| LIMITED GOVERNMENT | The government only has the powers granted to it by the Constitution and nothing more |
| DELEGATED (ENUMERATED) POWERS | Powers assigned specifically to the federal government (Example: Declaring War) |
| RESERVED POWERS | Powers specifically given to the states |
| CONCURRENT POWERS | Powers that the federal, state, and local governments share (Example: collecting taxes) |
| LEVY TAXES | Collecting money from the citizens for government provided services. |
