U.S. Constitution Vocabulary Flashcards

FEDERALISTS Supported the ratification of the new U.S. Constitution & a stronger central government
ANTI FEDERALISTS Opposed (against) ratification of the new U.S. Constitution, thought it would take too many rights away from the citizens
THE U.S. CONSTITUTION the document that lays out the principles of American government, establishes the form and system of government, and serves as the supreme law of the land
REPUBLIC A form of government where the PEOPLE rule. Citizens vote for leaders, and the representatives respond to the needs of the public
FEDERALISM The division of power between the national government and state governments
LIMITED GOVERNMENT The government only has the powers granted to it by the Constitution and nothing more
DELEGATED (ENUMERATED) POWERS Powers assigned specifically to the federal government (Example: Declaring War)
RESERVED POWERS Powers specifically given to the states
CONCURRENT POWERS Powers that the federal, state, and local governments share (Example: collecting taxes)
LEVY TAXES Collecting money from the citizens for government provided services.
