Mono- Uni- One or single ex. Monoplegia- Paralysis affecting only one limb.
Bi- Two, twice, or double ex. Bilateral- Something that effects or is present on both sides of the body.
Tri- Three ex. Tricuspid- A heart valve that has three triangular flaps to prevent the backflow of blood from the right ventricle into the right atrium.
Ab- Away from, away ex. Abduction- The action of leading or pulling a limb or body part away from the body’s midline.
Ad- Towards, in direction of ex. Adduction- The movement of a body part towards the body’s midline.
Ecto- Exo- Outside, outer ex. Exoskeleton- Hard, external protective structure found.
Endo- Within, internal, inside ex. Endocardium- The innermost layer of the heart’s wall.
Epi- On, upon, above, near ex. Epidermis- The outermost layer of the skin.
Anterior or ventral Front of the body ex. The anterior side of the leg contains the kneecap.
Posterior or dorsal Back of the body ex. The gluteus maximus muscle is located on the posterior side of the hip.
Superior Higher on the body ex. Superior vena cava- major blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper and middle body into the right atrium.
Inferior Lower on the body ex. Inferior vena cava- large vein that carries deoxygenates blood from the lower half of the body to the heart.
Lateral Middle of the body to the side ex. Lateral x-ray- X-ray taken from side to view structure or body part.
Distal Farther from the point of origin ex. Duct- the distal bile duct is part of the duct farthest from the gallbladder.
Proximal Closer to the point of attachment of the body ex. Tibia- the proximal fibula refers to the upper part of the shinbone, closest to the kneecap.
Ambi- Both, both sides, around ex. Ambilateral pain- Pain that is felt on both sides of the body.
Dys- Abnormal, difficult, painful, disordered ex. Dysuria- Painful or difficult urination.
Eu- Abnormal, difficult, painful, disordered ex. Eupnea- Normal, healthy breathing.
Homo- Same, similar ex. Homosexual- Describes a person who is sexually attracted to a person of the same sex.
Iso- Equal ex. Isoscholar- A type of chromosome that consist of two identical arms.
Mal- Bad, abnormal ex. Malnutrition- A state of poor nutrition.
-algia Pain ex. Myalgia- Muscle pain.
-emia Blood condition ex. Septicemia- Infection in the blood.
-itis Inflammation ex. Arthritis- Inflammation of a joint.
-lysis Breakdown, separation, loosen ex. Cytolysis- Breakdown of a cell.
-oid Similar to ex. Lymphoid- Resembling lymph.
-opathy Disease ex. Neuropathy- Disease of the nerves.
-pnea Breathing ex. Apnea- absence of breathing.
-centesis Remove fluid ex. Thoracentesis- Puncture to remove fluid in the chest cavity.
-ectomy Removal, excision ex. Hysterectomy- Removal of the uterus.
-ostomy Creation of an opening ex. Colostomy- Opening in the colon to the outside of the body.
-otomy Cutting into ex. Craniotomy- Incision into the skull.
-orrhaphy Suturing, repair ex. Tenorrhaphy- Suturing of tendons.
-opexy Fixation ex. Hysteropexy- Fixation of the uterus.
-oplasty Reconstruction ex. Blepharoplasty- Repair of the eyelids.
-otripsy Crushing ex. Lithotripsy- Crushing of a stone.
Diaphysis The shaft or middle part of a long bone.
Tendons Strong cords that attach muscles to bones.
Scoliosis An abnormal sideways curve of the spine.
Arthritis Inflammation of a joint, causing pain and stiffness.
Kyphosis A forward rounding of the upper back.
Cerebellum The part of the brain that controls balance and coordination.
Meninges Protective layers that cover the brain and spinal cord.
Neuralgia Nerve pain.
Epilepsy A brain disorder that causes repeated seizures.
Syncope Fainting, usually from reduced blood flow to the brain.
Miosis Abnormal constriction of the pupil.
Blepharitis Inflammation of the eyelids.
Aniridia Absence of the iris.
Otorrhea Discharge from the ear.
Ceruminosis Excess buildup of earwax
