| theme | what the work is about on a deeper level; what the author is trying to express; what the reader takes away |

| plot | the thing that happens in the story; the action |
| exposition | intro to the characters and setting; establishes the context for the story |
| rising action | complications are introduced |
| climax | what the complications lead to; the turning point of the story |
| falling action | the results of the climax; leading towards resolution |
| resolution | the conflict is resolved; return to normal or an establishment of new normal |
| subplot | secondary plot happening alongside-might mirror-main plot |
| where are subplots found | usually in longer works |
| primary (main) characters | character who drives the plot and are central to the story |
| protagonist | main character, who the plot revolves around; not necessarily "good" character |
| antagonist | main character that works in opposition to the protagonist; not necessarily "bad" character |
| secondary characters | supporting characters who play significant role but aren't primary focus; can help develop main characters |
| tertiary (minor) characters | play minor role; in few scenes; no relevance |
| round | character who is well developed |
| flat | a character who is not well developed |
| dynamic | character who changes throughout the story |
| static | a character who stays the same throughout the story |
| foil | a character whose characteristics highlight those of another |
| juxtaposition | 2 things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect |
| setting | context in which the story happens |
| location | physical place where the action happens |
| time | time in which the story takes place |
| situation | general circumstances depicted at specific point in the story (usually beginning and end, but can be a pivotal scene) |
| conflict | struggle between opposing forces; cannot exist unless there's conflict |
| internal conflict | opposing forces are 2 impulses or beliefs in a single character |
| external conflict | opposing forces are outside of character |
| interpersonal conflict | struggle between 2 characters |
| situational conflict | between character and element or system |
| symbolism | person, place, thing or event that represents something else |
| imagery | sensory detain; use of figurative language to evoke emotional response |
| foreshadowing | hint or clue about something that will happen later in the plot |
| irony | situation or statement characterized by a significant difference in what is expected or understood and what actually happens or is meant |
| verbal irony | when a word or expression means something different from what it appears to mean; when critical, it becomes sarcasm |
| situational irony | when a character holds a position or has an expectation that is reversed or fulfilled in an unexpected way |
| dramatic irony | when the audience knows something that a character doesn't |
