Medical terminology

Medical terms and their definitions

TermDefinition
EKG (Electrocardiogram) Is a test to measure the electrical heart activity .
CHF (Congestive Heart Failure) This is a condition where the heart isn't capable to pump enough blood to meet the bodies needs.
CNS (Central Nervous System) The Central Nervous System is one of the two major parts in the nervous System. This helps regulates and coordinate functions of the body.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) A MRI is another way to take medical imaging. This is used to create details of the bodies inside like. the brain, organs, muscles, etc.
BP (Blood Pressure) Is a force that your heart uses to pump blood throughout blood vessels. Its a measure of how well your heart is behaving and circulating blood.
HR (Heart Rate) The number of times your heart beats in a minute.
Ox/i (Oxygen) This is a gas the body needs for energy
CBC (Complete Blood Count) A blood test that gives you information about your red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, platelets and hematocrit.
QID (Four Times a Day) This is a prescription on how frequently you should take your medication.
RX (Prescription) Written order from a healthcare provider that gives the patient authority to a medication or treatment.
Arrhythmia An irregular heartbeat or abnormal heart rhythm.
Hypertension Often referred to as high blood pressure, is a condition where the blood pressure in the arteries chronically high.
Inflammation The body's reaction to injury, infection or harmful stimuli resulting in redness, swelling, pain, and heat.
Jaundice A condition where your eyes, skin, and mucous membranes turn yellow due to a buildup of bilirubin
Dialysis A procedure that removes waste and fluids from the blood when the kidneys aren't working,
Arthritis Inflammation of a joint
Bursitis Inflammation of a bursa
Arthroscopy Visual examination of the interior of a joint
Craniomalcia Softening of the skull
Myositis Inflammation of the muscle tissue
Cerebrospinal pertaining to the brain and spinal cord
Macrocephaly Abnormally large head
Meningopathy Disease of the meninges
Neuralgia Pain in the distribution of a nerve
Sonography Use of sound waves to produce diagnostic images; also called an ultrasound.
Scleronychia Thickening and hardening of the nails.
Conjunctivitis inflammation of the conjunctiva
Osteoacarcinoma bone cancer tumor
Ceruminolysis breakdown of earwax
Rhinorrhea runny nose
Arthritis Inflammation of a joint
Bursitis Inflammation of a bursa

Vestibular Neuritis Inflammation of the vestibular nerve
Hypergonadism excessive secretion of the sex glands
Thyromegaly enlargement of the thyroid
Exopthalmos profusion of the eyeball
Adrenal Virillism development of male secondary sexual characteristics caused by excessive secretion of the adrenal gland
Dysmetabolic syndrome combination of medical disorders associated with faulty metabolism
Hypercoagulability Increased ability of the blood to coagulate
Phlebarteriectasia Dilation of blood vessels
Lymphadenopathy incision into a lymph gland
Hematopoietic pertaining to the making of red blood cells
Microcytosis condition characterized by small red blood cells
Dysrhythmia an abnormal heart rhythm
Angina Pectoris oppressive pain the chest caused by irregular blood flow to the heart
Vena Cava one of the two largest veins in the body; plural vena cavae
Aortic Stenosis narrowing of the aorta
Coronary Thrombosis Obstruction of a Coronary artery by a clot
Tachypnea Rapid Breathing
Epistaxis nosebleed
Bronchospasm involuntary contraction of the bronchia
Expectoration coughing or spitting material out of the lungs
Sputum matter coughed up and spat out by individuals with respiratory disorders
Aerodontalgia tooth pain caused by exposure exposure to air
Esophagalgia pain in the esophagus
Dysentery disease with diarrhea, bowel spasms, fever, and dehydration
Icterus bilirubin staining of the basal nuclei of the brain
Cystalgia pain in the bladder
Hematuria blood in the urine
Balanorrhea discharge from the penis
Priapism persistent erection of the penis
Orchidoptosis downward displacement of a testicle
Orthopnea able to breathe only in an upright activity
Salpingectomy Surgical removal of a uterine (fallopian) tube.
Cervicitis Inflammation of the cervix.
Endometriosis Condition where endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus.
Myometrium Muscular layer of the uterus
Leukorrhea White vaginal discharge.
