Math Academic Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Integer All positive and negative whole numbers and zero
Distributive Property The process of distributing the number on the outside of the parentheses to each term on the inside
Product The answer to a multiplication problem
Quotient The answer to a division problem
Variable A letter that represents an unknown number
Coefficient A number used to multiply a variable/the number in front of a variable
Like Terms Terms that have the same variable raised to the same power
Expression One term or a group of terms that may include variables, constants, operators, and grouping symbols, but no equal sign
Equation A mathematical sentence that has two equal sides separated by an equal sign
Inequality A relationship/comparison between two expressions or values that are not equal to each other
Equivalent When two mathematical expressions yield the same result upon solving them
Ratio A way to show a relationship or compare two numbers of the same kind
Rate A comparison of two related quantities that have different units
Proportion Two ratios set up as equal
Constant of Proportionality The constant value that relates to the amount of change between y and x, often written as k
Scale Factor The number that is multiplied by the dimensions of one object to either increase or decrease the dimensions to be proportional to another object that looks the same but is a different size
Unit Rate How much of something per 1 unit of something else
Additive Inverse The sum of a number and its opposite is always equal to zero
Deposit Adding money to a bank account
Withdrawal Taking money out of a bank account
Descend/Descending Arranged from largest to smallest or going down
Ascend/Ascending Arranged from smallest to largest or going up
Markup An increase to the normal price
Markdown A reduction to the normal price
Circumference The distance around a circle
