| Barren | lacking interest or charm |
| Roomers | one who occupies a rented room in another's house |
| Latching | to close something with a latch |
| Stoop | a small porch or platform at the entrance to a house, or the steps leading up to it |
| Engaging | attractive; pleasing; attention-getting |
| Versatile | able to perform a variety of functions |
| Distinctive | have a unique quality, or style; notable |
| Narrative | something that is narrated; the process of telling a story |
| Exposition | An element of literature that introduces the key background information of a narrative |
| Characterization | The description of a character's physical appearance and personality |
| Imagery | A literary device that uses vivid description to appeals to readers' senses to create an image |
| Dynamic Character | A character who undergoes an important inner change from beginning to the end of a story |
| Static Character | A character who lacks complexity and does not change throughout the course of a short story |
| Mood | The overall emotion the author wants the reader to feel while reading the story |
| Precipitous | Very steep |
| Embitter | To cause bitter feelings in someone |
| Compromise | To reach an agreement, often by one person or group sacrificing something they wanted in order to end an argument |
| Marauder | A group or person who raids, steals. |
| Pinion | To tie up very tightly |
| Plight | A very bad or difficult situation |
| Endeavour | An attempt to achieve a goal |
| Languor | A state of feeling tired and relaxed |
| Reconciliation | The act of causing two people or groups to become friendly again after an argument or disagreement |
| Spurs | A long, gently-sloping area of the ground that runs down from a hill to lower ground |

| Acquiesced | To accept, agree, or allow something to happen by staying silent or by not arguing |
