Barren lacking interest or charm
Roomers one who occupies a rented room in another's house
Latching to close something with a latch
Stoop a small porch or platform at the entrance to a house, or the steps leading up to it
Engaging attractive; pleasing; attention-getting
Versatile able to perform a variety of functions
Distinctive have a unique quality, or style; notable
Narrative something that is narrated; the process of telling a story
Exposition An element of literature that introduces the key background information of a narrative
Characterization The description of a character's physical appearance and personality
Imagery A literary device that uses vivid description to appeals to readers' senses to create an image
Dynamic Character A character who undergoes an important inner change from beginning to the end of a story
Static Character A character who lacks complexity and does not change throughout the course of a short story
Mood The overall emotion the author wants the reader to feel while reading the story
Precipitous Very steep
Embitter To cause bitter feelings in someone
Compromise To reach an agreement, often by one person or group sacrificing something they wanted in order to end an argument
Marauder A group or person who raids, steals.
Pinion To tie up very tightly
Plight A very bad or difficult situation
Endeavour An attempt to achieve a goal
Languor A state of feeling tired and relaxed
Reconciliation The act of causing two people or groups to become friendly again after an argument or disagreement
Spurs A long, gently-sloping area of the ground that runs down from a hill to lower ground
Wrested To take something from someone with much effort
Acquiesced To accept, agree, or allow something to happen by staying silent or by not arguing
Wont A usual habit or way of behaving
Succor Something you do or give in order to help someone who is suffering or in a difficult situation
Vivid Seeming like real life because it is very clear, bright, or detailed
Stifling Making it difficult to breathe
Quest A journey made in search of something
Inhumane Not kind or gentle to people or animals
Dramatic Irony When the reader knows something that the characters do not
Palpable When a feeling or emotion is so intense it seems as though it can be touched
Disarming Removing suspicion by being charming
Amenity Any feature that provides comfort, convenience, or pleasure
Condone To give approval to
Barbarous Uncivilized, wild, or savage
Solicitously To behave or act with anxiety or concern
Futile Ineffective, useless; not successful
Lacerated Mangled, jagged
Palatial Resembling a palace
Ardent Having or expressing very intense feeling
Droll Amusing in an odd way
Repast Meal; mealtime
Adversary A person, group, or force that opposes or attacks; an enemy
Suspense Mental uncertainty or excitement due to waiting for an unknown outcome
Retribution Punishment on someone as vengeance for a wrong or criminal act
Avenger A person who punishes others or inflicts harm because of their wrongdoings
Accost To approach or address someone boldly or aggressively
Succession When a set of events occur one right after the other
Affliction Something that causes pain or suffering
Preclude To prevent something from happening; make impossible
Termination The action of bringing something or coming to an end
Unreliable Narrator A storyteller whose story cannot be fully trusted
Gothic Literature Literature that is characterized by mystery, horror, and gloom
Discerned To perceive, observe, or recognize something
