Periodic Table
Metals, Nonmetals, & Metalloids (6.5A)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Periodic Table of Elements | A table in which all the know elements are arranged by properties and are represented by one or two letters, referred to as chemical symbols. |
| Elements | A pure substance composed of the same type of atom throughout. |
| Classify/Classification | Sort or put into groups based on similar and dissimilar physical, chemical, or biological characteristics. |
| Metals | Most elements are metals; they are typically solid, shiny, malleable, and good conductiors of heat and electricity. |
| NonMetals | Elements that are typically not shiny, not malleable, and poor conductors of heat and electricity; usually gases and brittle solids. |
| Metalloids | Elements that have properities of both metals and nonmetals; sometimes referred to as simiconductors. |
| Rare Earth Elements | It is 17 metallic elements; located in the middle of the periodic table (atomic numbers 21, 39, and 57–71.) |
| Physical Properties | Characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the substance; for example, color, melting point, or conductivity. |
| Luster | The way the surface of a mineral reflects light; either metallic or non-metallic such as silky, dull, glassy, or resinous. |
| Malleability | The ability of something to be reshaped without breaking. |
| Brittle | A tendency to break rather than flex or bend. |
| Ductile | The ability to be stretched in to wire. |
| Semiconductor | A substance that shows the property of electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and that of an insulator; the foundation of modern electronics. |
| Conductor | A substance that readily transfers heat or electrical energy. |
| Insulator | A material that does not conduct heat or electrical current. |
| Precipitate | When a is solid formed due to a chemical reaction of liquids. |
| Magnetism | A force that can attract or repel certain materials, like iron. |
| Thermal Energy | It is the internal energy of a system that results from the kinetic energy of its atoms and molecules. |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
