Metals, NonMetals, & Metalloids

QuestionAnswer
Periodica Table A table in which all the known elements are arranged by properties and are represented by one or two letters, referred to as chemical symbals.
Metals Most elements are metals; they are typically solid, shiny, mallealble, and good conductors of of heat and electricity.
Nonmetals Elements that are typically not shiny, not malleable, and poor conductors of heat and electricity; usually gases or brittle solids.
Metalloids Elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetal; sometimes referred to as semiconductors.
Brittle A dendency to break rather than flex or bend.
Luster The way the surface of a mineral reflects light; either metallic or non-metallic such as silky, dull, glassy, or resinous.
Malleability The ability of something to something to be reshaped without breaking.
Semiconductor A substance that shows the property of electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and that of an insulator; the foundation of modern electronics
Ductile The ability to be stretched in to wire.
Conductor A substance that readily transfers heat or electrical energy.
Insulator A material that does not conduct heat or electrical current
Conductivity The ablility of a substance to transfer heat or electricl energy,
Physical Properties Characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the substance; for example, color, melting point, or conductivity.
Classify/Classification Sort or put into groups based on similar and dissimilar, physical, chemical, or biological characteristics.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Element A pure substance composed of the same type of atom throughout
Thermal Energy The internal energy of a system that results from the kinetic energy of its atoms and molecules.
Magnetism an invisible force that can attract or repel certain materials, like iron.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
