dehydration synthesis VS hydrolysis: dehydration synthesis: monomers are joined together to form polymers hydrolysis: polymers are broken down into monomers
polar covalent bonds: -shared unequally around a molecule (w/ charge) -leads to hydrogen bonds
hydrogen bonds: weak attraction between molecules (ex: H2O)
nonpolar covalent bonds: shared equally (no charge)
ionic bonds: electrons are transferred to make a full valence shell. ex: NaCl (sodium + chlorine = table salt)
hydrophobic vs hydrophillic: phobic/nonpolar: repels water, tails phillic/polar: attracts water, head if the cell membrane dissolved, there's no protection = death
polymer: long molecule made up of monomers
monomer: serve as the building block for polymers
