Shack

TermDefinition
Corpus Copies of spoken and written texts, stored electronically. This can include texts, such as newspapers, blogs, speeches, tweets and advertisements.
Corpus linguistics One way of analyzing language is through corpus linguistics. Usually, the analysis of the corpus data is performed using specialized software and takes into account the frequency of the particular linguistic feature being investigated.
Transcript An exact written copy of what has been spoken. This is used to analyse unscripted discourse. Some transcripts use phonetic symbols to represent sounds of the speakers more accurately.
The Great Vowel Shift where the pronounciation of vowels [particularly long vowels]changed.
Obsolete often meaning is no longer understood
Lexis all the words in a language
Derivation forming a new word from an existing word
Coinage the creation of a new word which people start to use
Neologism a newly invented word
Eponym a word which takes a name of its inventor or discoverer
Prefix a group of letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word
Suffix a group of letters added at the end of a word to make a new word
Root/Stem the part of a word which cannot be changed and which can be added to for a change in meaning
Compounding forming a word from two/+ units that are themselves words
Blending forming a new word by joining the beginning of one word to the end of another
Coalescence the phonological process whereby two sounds merge into one
Backformation form of clipping where a long word or phrase is shortened and gives a new word in a difference form
Reduplication where sounds are repeated with identical or very slight change
