ES: Space System 1

Big Bang + Stars

QuestionAnswer
Lifespan of the Sun The entire duration of the Sun’s existence (from its formation about 4.6 billion years ago to its future transition into a red giant and then a white dwarf)
Nuclear Fusion The process in a star's core where hydrogen nuclei combine to form helium, releasing vast amounts of energy
Radiation The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves (including visible light, which travels from the Sun’s surface through space to reach Earth)
Masses of Stars The amount of matter in stars, which determines their life cycles and energy outputs
Lifetime of Stars The stages stars go through from birth to death, which vary based on mass and composition
Non-Cyclic Any irregular changes that do not follow a pattern or loop (ex. the Sun’s radiation output changes over centuries)
Big Bang Theory A scientific explanation for the origin of the universe (beginning as a singularity approximately 13.8 billion years ago and has been expanding ever since)
Redshift Where light from distant galaxies appears shifted toward the red end of the spectrum, indicating that these galaxies are moving away from us
Blueshift Where light from distant galaxies appears shifted toward the blue end of the spectrum, indicating that these galaxies are moving toward us
Doppler Shift Wave frequency changes as a result of the objects moving toward or away from each other (ex. redshift, blueshift, and ambulance sirens)
Universe The totality of all space, time, matter, and energy that exists (including galaxies, stars, planets, and all forms of matter and radiation)
Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation The faint glow of radiation left over from the Big Bang (providing strong evidence for the Big Bang theory/expanding universe)
Composition of Matter The types and proportions of elements and substances that make up the universe (hydrogen and helium are most common)
Electromagnetic Radiation Energy waves emitted by stars and other celestial objects (including visible light, radio waves, and X-rays)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
