| tax | an amount of money that is paid to the government of your city, your state, or your country so that it can pay for public services like roads, trains, buses, and schools |
| debt | large amount of money owed |
| French and Indian War | war fought in the American colonies between England and France over who would control Indian lands in the new colonies of North America. It occurred between 1754 and 1763. The end result was British gained access to the Ohio River Valley. |

| Stamp Act | (1765) new money tax on newspapers, dice, and playing cards |
| Townshend Act | (1767) new money tax on paint, glass, paper, and tea |
