Roots and Exponents

Unit 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Base (of a power) the (big) number used in repeated multiplication/division
Exponent A number that tells you how many times you multiply a number by itself.
Square of a Number A number that us raised to the second power. ... (when you multiply that number by itself)
Square Root of a Number A number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number.
Cube of a number A number that is raised to the third power. ... (when you multiply that number by itself three times)
Cube Root of a Number a number that, when multiplied by itself 3 times, gives the original number
± tells you one value is positive and one value is negative (example: ±3 = 3 and -3
Power Refers to the exponent. (A term that uses an exponent)
Exponential Numbers numbers that contain exponents
Rational Numbers A number that can be written as a fraction or its opposite. The decimal form either terminates or repeats.
Irrational Numbers A number that cannot be written as a fraction. The decimal form does not terminate or does not have a repeating pattern.
Area The measurement of the space within a 2D shape.
Volume The measurement of space in a 3D solid.
Exponent Form A term that uses exponent - a number written with a power such as 2 to the 5th power
Expanded Form When we write a number with a power or exponent as a multiplication expression such as 2 to th e 5th power written as 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
