| Safety Data Sheet (SDS) | an OSHA-required document that explains the risks of a chemical product |
| safety precaution | safety precaution information about the safe operation of a piece of equipment, which is usually found in the instruction manual or on equipment labels |
| aseptic techniques | practices used by healthcare professionals to keep an environment free of pathogens and prevent the spread of infections |
| chain of infection | the elements required for an infection to spread from one source to another |
| pathogen | a disease-causing microorganism |
| personal protective equipment (PPE) | equipment such as gloves, masks, gowns, respirators, and eyewear worn to protect skin, clothing, and the respiratory tract from infectious agents |
| standard precautions | steps that a healthcare worker takes with all patients to prevent the spread of infection |
| transmission-based precautions | special steps used in addition to standard precautions, chosen based on how the patient’s infection is spread |
| electrical shock | a physical reaction to electricity passing through the body |
