Geography Basics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Equator | Imaginary line separates the northern and southern hemispheres; Zero (0) degrees Latitude |
| Prime Meridian | Imaginary line separates the eastern and western hemispheres; Zero (0) degrees Longitude; Runs through Greenwich, England |
| Latitude | Flat, imaginary lines running parallel to each other. 0° = Equator (the middle) |
| Longitude | Long, imaginary lines running from one pole to the other. 0° = Prime Meridian (Greenwich, England) |
| Meridians | These are lines of Longitude |
| Parallels | These are lines of Latitude |
| Absolute Location | Precisely where a Latitude line and Longitude line intersect (or cross) |
| Hemisphere | Half of the earth. Equator creates Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Prime Meridian creates Eastern and Western Hemispheres |
