Geography Basics

TermDefinition
Equator Imaginary line separates the northern and southern hemispheres; Zero (0) degrees Latitude
Prime Meridian Imaginary line separates the eastern and western hemispheres; Zero (0) degrees Longitude; Runs through Greenwich, England
Latitude Flat, imaginary lines running parallel to each other. 0° = Equator (the middle)
Longitude Long, imaginary lines running from one pole to the other. 0° = Prime Meridian (Greenwich, England)
Meridians These are lines of Longitude
Parallels These are lines of Latitude
Absolute Location Precisely where a Latitude line and Longitude line intersect (or cross)
Hemisphere Half of the earth. Equator creates Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Prime Meridian creates Eastern and Western Hemispheres
