REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

FUNCTIONS OF THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM To produce off springs , ensure the continuation of a species.
Parts of the Female Reproductive System Essential organs are gonads (ovaries), which produce sex cells (ova). Uterus , fallopian tube , ducts, glands and external genitalia.
OVARIES Are responsible for the production and secretion of one or in rare cases 2 eggs each month. Produces estrogen and progesterone .
UTERUS Composed of body, fundus, and cervix . Lies in pelvic cavity just behind urinary bladder. The organ in the lower abdomen of a woman where gestation of a fetus occurs . FUNDUS = major region on the uterus
FALLOPIAN TUBE A narrow tube that connects the ovary and the uterus.
VAGINA Distensible tube about 10 cm long. Located between urinary bladder and rectum in the pelvis. Receives penis during sexual intercourse and is birth canal for normal delivery of baby at end of pregnancy.
BREAST Located over pectoral muscles of thorax. Size determined by fat quantity more than amount of glandular (milk-secreting) tissue. Lactiferous ducts drain at nipple, which is surrounded by pigmented areola.
Female External genitalia Include mons pubis, clitoris, external urinary meatus, openings of vestibular glands, orifice of vagina, labia minora and majora, and hymen . Perineum: Area between vaginal opening and anus
Endometrium Inside the uterus , the mucous membrane lining the inner wall or layer of the uterus .
Mammary Gland Milk producing gland of women .
Oocyte (ovum) The female reproductive germ cell know as egg . Gamete from the female parent.
Function of the Estrogen Female sex hormone that promotes the development and maintenance of female sexual characteristics .
Function of the progesterone Stimulates the uterus to prepare for pregnancy . Is produced by the corpus luteum.
Menopause A natural phenomenon in which woman passes from a reproductive state to a nonreproductive state . Cessation of menstruation.
Gametes Sex cells that fuse at fertilization to form a one-celled zygote, the first cell of the offspring.
Sperm Gamete from the male parent.
Parts of the Male Reproductive System Essential organs of reproduction are the gonads (testes in men), which produce sex cells (spermatozoa) Accessory organs of reproduction: ducts , sex glands and external genitalia
TESTES Male reproductive organ that produce sperm.
Spermatogenesis Is the process of sperm production.
Spermatozoa ( Sperm ) Male reproductive cell.
PROSTATE GLAND A gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in males that produces a fluid component of the semen . About the size and shape of a walnut .
SEMINAL VESSICLES Contribute the majority of seminal fluid volume.
VAS DEFERENCE A muscular tube that extends from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct.
EPIDIDYMIS A series of tightly coiled tube wrapped around the back of the testes .
Androgens male sex hormones
Testosterone It is the most abundant androgen . Produce in the testes that stimulates the development of male sexual characteristics.
bulbourethral gland Produces a lubricating secretion that makes up about 5% of the seminal fluid.
Dysmenorrhea Menstrual cramps
Oligospermia Low sperm production.
cryptorchidism Condition in which the testes fail to descend.
menarche The term called for the first menses .
HRT Hormone Replacement Therapy Use to reduce symptoms of menopause.
