bastic terms

TermDefinition
population a collection, or set, of indivuals or objects or events whose propeties are to be analyzed
sample a subset of a population
variable a trait or feature that you are interested in learning about for each person or item in a group (population or sample).
data (singular) The value you get for the variable from one person or item in the group. It can be a number, a word, or a symbol.
data (plural) The set of values collected for the variable from each of the elements belonging to the sample
Experiment a planned activity where the results give a set of data
parameter a numerical value that summarizes all the data from the entire population.
statistic a numerical value summerizing the sample data
qualititative a variable that describes or puts each item in a group into a category
quantitative a variable that measures something about each item in the population.
Nominal variable a qualitative variable that sorts items into categories. You can’t do math with these categories, and they don’t have any order.
Ordinal variable a qualitative variable that puts items in a specific order or ranking.
discrete variables quantitative variables that can only take specific countable values, like separate points on a number line with gaps between them.
continous variable a quantitative variable that can take any value within a range, including all values between two points on a number line.
