| connotation | the feelings, ideas, or emotions a word makes you think |
| denotation | the exact dictionary definition of a word |
| exposition | the introduction to the story that usually reveals the setting, the major characters , and the conflict. |

| climax | the event that is the turning point in the story, at which the conflict is usually resolved. |
| falling action | the events that conclude the story and reveal its ending |
| resolution | the events that conclude the story and reveal the message |
| theme | the central message that runs throughout a story |
| metaphor | metaphor compares two unlike things using words likes or as |
| personification | give human characteristics or traits to an animal or non living things |
| hyperbole | a type of figurative language that makes exaggerated statements which is not meant to be taken literally |
| sensory details | words that appeal to the 5 senses and/or language that allows the reader to make mental images |
| simile | compares 2 unlike things using words like, like or as |
| figurative language | language used in an imaginative way to express ideas that are not literally true |
| sub plot | the secondary that happens along with the main plot |
| commentary | the readers own interpretation of what is happening within the story. This goes beyond surface-level of the text , and can include the readers personal opinions. |

| non fiction | a type of writing that is based on real events |
| central idea | the main message a writer wants readers to understand from a text |
| memoir | a form of narrative writing, written from the perspective from the author, about an important time in their life |
| thesis statement | a sentence in the introduction of an essay that states the writers position or opinion on the topic of an essay |
