| Plot | The events that happen in the beginning, middle, and end of a story |
| Setting | The time and place of a story. |
| Dialogue | The conversations characters have with each other. |
| internal conflict | A problem or struggle that happens inside a character's mind or heart |
| external conflict | A problem or struggle between a character and something outside of them |
| Narrator | The person or voice telling a story |
| First person point of view | The narrator is a character inside the story and uses words like I,me.my,we |
| Third person point of view | The narrator is outside the story and uses words like he,she,they,them |
| figurative language | language used in an imaginary way to express ideas that are not literally true |
| Simile | compares two unlike things using words like like or as |
| Metaphor | metaphor compares two unlike things without using words like or as |
| Sensory details | Words that appeal to the 5 senses and/or language that allows the reader to make mental images. |
| Exposition | The introduction to the story that usually reveals the setting, the major characters, and the conflict. |
| Rising Action | The major events that develop the plot and lead to the climax |
| Falling Action | The events that begin to conclude the story and lead to the ending |
| Resolution | The events that conclude the story and reveal its message. |
| theme | The central message that runs throughout the story. |
| Hyperbole | A type of figurative language that makes an exaggerated statement which is not meant to be literally |
| Metaphor | a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. |
| connotation | The feelings, ideas, or emotions a word makes you think of |
| denotation | The literal, dictionary definition of a word |
| personification | Giving human characteristics or traits to an animal or non living thing |
| commentary | The reader's own interpretation of what is happening within the story. This goes goes beyond the surface-level of the text, and can include the reader's personal opinions. |
| Foreshadow | Warning of a future event |
| Nonfiction | prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or history. |
| memoir | a historical account or biography written from personal knowledge or special sources. |
| Central idea | the primary, overarching message or main point an author wants to convey about a topic, acting as the foundation of a text. |
| Thesis statement | a sentence or two, typically found in the introduction, that summarizes the main argument, claim, or purpose of an essay or research paper |
| Autobiography | A written account about someone's life written by themselves. |
