| plot | the events that happen in the beginning middle,and end of a story |
| setting | the time and place of a story |
| dialogue | conversations characters have with each other |
| internal conflict | a problem or struggle that happen inside a character's mind or heart |
| external conflict | a problem or struggle between a character and something outside of them |
| narrator | the speaker or voice telling a story |
| first person point of view | the narrator is a character inside the story and uses words like I,me ,my ,we |
| third person point of view | the narrator is outside the story and uses words like he,she,they,them |
| figurative language | language used in an imaginary way to express ideas that are not literally true. |
| simile | compares two unlike things using words such a like or as. |
| metaphor | metaphor compares two unlike things without using the words like or as. |
| sensory details | words that appeal to the five senses or language that allows the reader to create mental images. |
| exposition | the introduction to the story that usually reveals the setting the major character and the conflict |
| rising action | the major events that develop the plot and lead to the climax |
| climax | the event that is the turning point in the story, at which the conflict is usually resolved |
| falling action | the event that happen after the climax and start to lead towards the ending |
| resolution | the events that conclude the story and reveal its message /ending |
| theme | the central message that runs through a story |
| commentary | the reader's own interpretation of what is happening within a story.this goes beyond the surface-level of the text, can include the reader's personal opinions. |
| peculiar | when something is peculiar ,that means odd strange,or unusual |
| ornery | being ornery is to be difficult, stubborn,or to have a bad- temper. |
| divulger | to divulger something is to share a secret or private information |
| gullible | to be gullible is to easily belief something or be too trusting of something someone says. |
| caboodle | a carboodle is a collection or group of things. |
| connotation | the feelings ,ideas, or emotions a word makes you think of. |
| denotation | the literal, dictionary definition of a word |
| personification | giving human characteristics or traits to an animal or non living thing |
| subplot | the secondary plot that happens along with the main plot |
| hyperbole | a type of figurative language that makes an exaggerated statement which is not meant to be taken literally |
