| dialogue | conversations characters have with each other. |
| internal conflict | a problem or struggle between that happens inside a characters mind of heart |
| external conflict | a problem or struggle between a character and something outside of them. |
| narrator | the person or voice telling story |
| first person point of view | the narrator is a character inside the story and uses words like I,me,my,we |
| third person point of view | the narrator is outside the story and uses words like he,she, they,them |
| figurative language | language used in an imaginary way to express ideas that are not literally true. |
| simile | compares two unlike things using words such as like or as |
| metaphor | metaphor compares two unlikes things without using the words like or as. |
| Exposition | the introduction to the story that usually reveals the setting, the major character, and the conflict, |
| rising action | the major events that develop the plot and lead to the climax |
| climax | the event that is the Turning point in the story, at which the conflict is usually resolved. |
| falling action | the events that begin to conclude the story and lead to the ending |
| resolution | the events that conclude the story and reavelal its message. |
| theme | The central message that runs throughout a story |
| malevolent | To be malevolent is to have a desire to harm others, evil, or mean spirited |
| Rhodenderon | a rhodenderon is a type of bush or shrub with large,bright flowers that bloom in the spring. |
| skeptical | to be skeptical is to have doubts about something or question it entirely. |
| manna | manna is a biblical term that refers to something that comes unexpectedly , like a gift or blessing. |
| sensory details | words that appeal to the five senses and/or language that allows the reader to create mental images. |
| personification | giving humans characteristics or traits to an animal or non living thing |
| commentary | the readers own interpretation of what is happening within a story. this goes beyond the surface level of the text and can include the readers personal opinions |
| subplot | the secondary plot that happens along with the main plot |
| hyperbole | a type of figurative language that makes an exaggerated statement which is not meant to be taken literally. |
| Denotation | The literal dictionary definition of a word |
| connotation | the feelings, ideas or emotion a word makes you think of. |
| foreshadow | warning of a future event |
| non fiction | A type of writing that is based on real events and real people |
| central idea | the maini message a writer wants readers to understand from a text |
| memoir | A form of narrative writing written from the perspective of the author about an important time in their life |
| thesis | A sentence in the introduction of an essay that states the writers position or opinion on the topic of the essay |
