| plot | the events that happen in the beginning and middle and end of a story. |
| setting | the time and place of a story. |
| dialogue | conversation character have with each other. |
| internal conflict | A problem or struggle that happens inside a characters mind or heart. |
| External conflict | A problem or struggle between a character and something outside of them. |
| Narrator | The person or voice telling a story. |
| First person point of view | The narrator is a character in inside the story and uses words like I,me, my ,we. |
| Third person point of view | The narrator is outside the story and uses words like he, she, they, them. |
| figurative language | language used in an imaginary way to express ideas that are not literally true. |
| simile | compare two unlike things using words such as like or as. |
| metaphor | metaphor compares two unlike things without using the words like or as. |
| sensory details | Words that appeal to the five senses and/or language that follows the reader to create mental images. |
| connotation | The feeling,ideas,or emotion a word makes you think of. |
| denotation | The exact dictionary definition of a word. |
| Exposition | The introduction to the story that usually reveals the setting, the major characters, and the conflict. |
| Rising Action | The major event develop the plot and lead to the climax. |
| climax | The even that is the turning pain in the story, at which the conflict is usually resolved. |
| Falling Action | The events that began to conclude the story and lead to the ending. |
| Resolution | The events that conclude the story and reveal its message. |
| Theme | The central message that runs throughout a story. |
| Foreshadowing | Clues or hints in a story of events that will happen later in the plot. |
| Personification | Giving human characteristics or traits to an animal or non living things. |
| commentary | The reader's own interpretation of what is happening within the a story. This goes beyond the surface-level of the text, and can include the readers personal opinions. |
| peculiar | When something is peculiar, that means it is odd, strange, or unusual. |
| ornery | being ornery is to be difficult, stubborn, or to have a bad-temper. |
| divulge | to divulge something is to share a secret, or private information. |
| gullible | to be gullible is to easily believe something or too trusting of something someone says. |
| caboodle | A caboodle is a collection or groups of things. |
| omnipotent | When something is omnipotent, it has unlimited power and can do anything |
| defiant | To be defiant, is to openly disobey a rule or law |
| remarkable | when something is remarkable, it is special, interesting, and worth mentioning. |
| boa | A boa is a type of long scarf made of feathers or similar material. |
| gallantly | to do something gallantly, is to show bravery and good manners. |
| dismantle | To dismantle something is to break it apart. |
| diabolic | when something is diabolic that means it is extremely evil or cruel. |
| cholesterol | Cholesterol refers to an unhealthy fat found in some foods, such as butter. |
| receptionist | A receptionist is someone who sits at a desk and answers for businesses. |
| sensible | To be sensible is to show careful judgement, or make good, thought-out decisions |
| pandemonium | A pandemonium refers to a feeling when everything Is wild, loud,or out of control |
| Subplot | The secondary plot that happens along with the main plot. |
| hyperbole | A type of figurative language that makes an exaggerated statement which is not meant to be taken literally. |
| Thesis (statement) | A sentence in the introduction of and essay that states the writer's position or opinion on the topic of the essay. |
| Memoir | A form of narrative writing, written from the perspective of the author, about an important time in their life. |
| Non- Fiction | A type of writing that is based on real events and real people. |
| Central idea | The main message a writer wants readers to understand from a text. |
