Lab Equipment

TermDefinition
Erlenmyer flask A laboratory flask used for measurements of samples in milliliters, the flask has a flat bottom, a conical body, and a cylindrical neck.
Volumetric flask A laboratory flask used for measurements of samples in milliliters, they are used for exact measurements and preparation of solutions.
Beaker A cylindrical container with a flat bottom, it also has a small spout to help with pouring.
Graduated cylinder Measuring cylinder or mixing cylinder is a common piece of laboratory equipment used for measuring the volume of a liquid.
Pipette A slender tube attached to a bulb for transferring or measuring out small quantities of liquid.
Rubber stopper Looks like a rubber version of a cork, used for sealing glass containers.
Micro Analytical balance A small battery operated instrument that is used to measure small mass in -1L range.
Electronic Balance A device used to measure weight or mass
Cuvette Small rectangular glass or plastic tube that are clear containers for holding liquid sample.
Syringe A tube that has a nozzle with a piston used to suck and eject liquids.
Petri dish Small, clear dish that holds microrganisms .
Funnel A tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom used for guiding liquid or powder into a small opening.
Microscope An optical instrument used for viewing very small objects, such as mineral samples, animal cells, or plant cells, typically magnified several hundred times.
Microscope slide A thin flat piece of glass used to hold objects for examination under a microscope.
Cover Slip A small piece of glass or plastic used to cover a specimen on a microscope slide.
Kim wipes A type of cleaning tissue commonly used in laboratories.
Collection jar Used to securely contain samples or materials with a lid.
Test tube A hollow cylinder of thin glass with one end closed, useful for holding liquids, and experimentation.
Dropper A short glass tube with a rubber bulb top Used to measure liquids by drops.
Mortar and pestle A set of two tools: a bowl (mortar) and a grinding tool (pestle), used to mix, crush, grind, and powder ingredients.
Glass Stirring Rod A laboratory tool, usually made of solid glass, used to stir/mix chemicals.
Hot plate A device with a flat surface that heats up when it is plugged in, used for heating chemicals.
Thermometer A device that measures the temperature, or the temperature gradient.
Test Tube Rack A laboratory tool designed to hold test tubes upright, preventing them from tipping over and potentially spilling their contents.
Magnifying Lens A convex lens used to allow users to see small details of objects more clearly.
Spring Balance A tool used to measure force or weight by measuring the extension of a spring.
Digital Timer An electronic device used to measure/time activities or experiments while displaying time.
Pen Light A small, portable flashlight, often resembling a pen in size and shape. Useful for focused, directed light, for examinations, for general tasks where a small, bright light source is needed.
Safety Googles A type of protective eyewear designed to enclose and protect the eyes better than safety glasses.
Forceps/Tweezers Usually small handheld tools used for grasping and holding small objects.
