Data Analysis Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Variable | A letter in a math expression or equation that is holding a place for a future value/number. Examples: 2x+5, 9a(2b-7) |
| Data Cycle | A process for data analysis |
| Representations | Different ways to represent the same data set |
| Analyze | To look for meaningful patterns in a data set |
| Scatterplot | Graphical representation of the relationship between two numerical sets of data |
| Axis, x and y | The horizontal (x) and vertical (y) number lines on a coordinate plane |
| Ordered pairs | An x-value and a y-value: (3,5) or (-2,0) |
| Points | The place on a coordinate plane that lines up with an x-value and an y-value |
| Mapping | A graphical representation of a data set, one oval marked x and the other y with arrows from each x-value to an y-value |
| Table | A two-column (or row) table , one labelled x and the other y. Below each variable are numbers that correspond to ordered pairs of a data set. |
| Line of best fit | When all of the data is averaged, a line or curve on a coordinate plane connects or closely matches the points of data. |
| Linear | A function that has a constant rate of change: y=x |
| Quadratic | A function in the shape of a U on a coordinate plane and with an equation where x is squared: y=x^2 |
| Function | A relationship between two quantities in which every input corresponds to exactly one output |
| Relation | A relation is a set of ordered pairs that shows a connection or relationship between two sets of elements |
| Independent variable | The x variable of a graph; input |
| Dependent variable | The y variable of a graph; output |
| Correlation | A relationship between the dependent (y) values and independent (x) values |
| Bivariate data | Numerical data represented by two variables (examples: time and distance, age and height) |
