| figurative language | A deviation from what speakers of a language understand as the ordinary or standard use of words in order to achieve some special meaning or effect |
| first person point of view | the narrator is a character in the story who may or may not influence events within it |
| foil | a character who serves as a contrast or a conflict to another character |
| hyperbole | statements are exaggerated |
| metaphor | comparison of two unlike things not using like or as |
| personification | giving human like qualities to non-living objects |

| simile | comparison of two unlike things using like or as |
| symbol | Something that stands for more than it is |
| third person limited point of view | the narrator of the story is an outside observer and only knows the thoughts and feelings of 1 character. |
| third person omniscient point of view | The narrator is considered to be “all knowing” and can see/hear everything in the story and can tell the reader what each characters are thinking and feeling |
