IP Addressing and Subnets
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What does IP stand for | Internet protocol |
| 1111.1111.1111.0000 - What portion of this address indicates the 'subnet mask?' | The .0000 part indicates that last octet is the part of the address that shows how much is available to the subnet. |
| What is a subnetting? | The practice of dividing a single large network into smaller, independent sub-networks |
| What is a subnet mask? | A software divider or stencil that tells a device which portion of an IP address belongs to the network and which portion belongs to the host |
| Where does a Subnet Mask physically live? | It is not a physical hardware box; it is a software setting stored in a device's memory/OS or network interface settings. |
| What is the difference between a Static IP and a Dynamic IP? | A Static IP is a manually assigned, permanent address (eg for some special servers/printers etc), whereas a Dynamic IP is an automatically leased, temporary address provided by a DHCP server |
| What are the two parts of an IP Address? | The Network ID (which identifies the shared "street" or network segment) and the Host ID (which identifies the specific "house" or device) |
| What is an IPv4 Address? | A 32-bit numeric identifier assigned to a network device, written as four octets separated by dots with numbers ranging from 0 to 255 |
| How does a device decide whether to send data directly or to a Default Gateway? | It applies its subnet mask to the destination IP address: if the resulting Network ID matches its own, it sends data directly across the local network; if different, it hands the packet over to the router (Default Gateway) |
| How many billions of IP addresses are there with IPv4 technologies? | There are about 4.29 billion possible IPv4 addresses which is why we have run out of IP addresses, officially in February 2011 according to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority ("IANA") |
| Do you know how many billions of IPv6 addresses there are? | There are 340 trillion trillion billion IP addresses available. This sort of number means that every single person on the planet could have millions of IP addresses assigned to them. Mathematically, this is 3.4 times 10 to the power of 29. Where as 1 billion is 1 times 10 with 9 zeros. |
