Ch 9 Ground Ladders

Ladder Inspection, Cleaning, Mainteanance

FF must clean and inspect ladders per department policy after each use
To ensure ground ladders operate safely FF perform Periodic inspections, Service tests, Cleaning, Maintenance
NFPA 1932 Maintenace, Use, and Service Testing of In-Service Fire Department Ground Ladders. Ladders must be inspected after each use and on a monthly basis
When inspecting ground ladders check the following 1. Heat sensor labels, 2. Heavy carbon deposits or blistered paint. 3. Discoloration on fiberglass. 4. Rungs for damage or wear, tightness. 6. Bolts and rivets for tightness. 7. Welds for any cracks. 8. Beams and rungs for damage, 9. Worn areas
markings that each ladder needs to have Apparatus designation or a locally assigned inventory number, A white tip or reflective tape attached to tip, A stripe painted on a rail
NPFA 1960 Standard for fire Hose connection, Spray Nozzles, manufactures Design of Fire department Grund Ladders, Fire Hose, and Powered Rescue Tools
Following items must be affixed to the ladder Designed ladder length (marked on each beam within 12 inches of butt plate). A manufacturers name Plate, Electrical hazard warning label, Ladder position label indicating climbing angle and side of ladder that must be away from building, Heat sensor
Heat sensor is present to 300 F and have an expiration date on it
Inspecting Metal and Fiberglass ladders 1. Evidence of flame or heat damage, 2. Loose or damaged rungs. 3. Corrosion or rust. 4. Loose or missing rivets or fasteners. 5. Damage or missing rubber on footpads. 6. Cracks, chipping of fiberglass. 7. Dry rot or damage to halyard
Inspecting ladders with Wooden Components 1. Finish has been chaffed. 2. Darkening of varnish. 3. Dark streaks in wood. 4. Marred, worn, cracked parts. 5. Shoes rounded 6. Water damage
Inspecting Roof ladders 1, Hooks assemblies show no rust. 2. Hooks have no deformities. 3. All parts remain firmly attached
Inspecting Extension Ladders Pawl assemblies, Halyard, Halyard cable (taunt in the bedded position) Pulleys, Ladder guides
Service tests all ground ladders Before placing them into service, annually while in service, after any use that exposes them to high heat
Other reasons to service test ladders Suspected being unsafe, have been overloaded, impact loading, unusual usage conditions, exposed to direct flame contact, heat sensor indicates exposure to heat, Completion of repairs such as replacing the halyard
When cleaning the ladder, you should Use soft bristle brush and running water, remove tar, oil, or greasy residue with mild soap and water or safe solvents, apply lubrication, look for damage wear and report defects, Wipe ladder dry
General maintenance requirements for ground ladders Free of moisture, store away from vehicle exhaust, exposing to elements of weather, paint only for identification, paint only within 18 inches of the tip and butt of the beams
