Unit 11 Statistics
measures of center, measures of variation
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mean | The sum of the data divided by the number of items in the data set. |
| Median | The middle number of the ordered data, or the mean of the middle two numbers. |
| Mode | The number or numbers that occur most often. |
| Outlier | A number in a data set that is much greater or much less than the rest of the numbers. |
| Range | The difference between the greatest and the least value of the set. |
| Quartiles | The values that divide the data into four equal parts when the data is arranged in numerical order. |
| Interquartile Range | The range of the middle half of a set of data. It is the difference between the third and the first quartile. |
| Mean Absolute Deviation | A way to measure how spread out the data is. It is the average amount that each number is away from the mean. |
| Lower Quartile | otherwise known as Q1 |
| Upper Quartile | otherwise known as Q3 |
| Symmetric | The shape of the data on the left of the center is the same as the shape of the data on the right of the center. |
| Asymmetric | The shape of the graph on one side of the center is different from the shape on the other side of the center. |
