Unit 11 Statistics

measures of center, measures of variation

TermDefinition
Mean The sum of the data divided by the number of items in the data set.
Median The middle number of the ordered data, or the mean of the middle two numbers.
Mode The number or numbers that occur most often.
Outlier A number in a data set that is much greater or much less than the rest of the numbers.
Range The difference between the greatest and the least value of the set.
Quartiles The values that divide the data into four equal parts when the data is arranged in numerical order.
Interquartile Range The range of the middle half of a set of data. It is the difference between the third and the first quartile.
Mean Absolute Deviation A way to measure how spread out the data is. It is the average amount that each number is away from the mean.
Lower Quartile otherwise known as Q1
Upper Quartile otherwise known as Q3
Symmetric The shape of the data on the left of the center is the same as the shape of the data on the right of the center.
Asymmetric The shape of the graph on one side of the center is different from the shape on the other side of the center.
