What is an atom? Smallest particle of a chemical element
What are the 3 subatomic particles? 1. Proton 2. Neutron 3. Electron
What are the charges on the subatomic particles? Protons=Positive Neutron=Neutral Electron=Negative
What is the electron arrangement? 2,8,8
What is an element? Elements are the simplest substances, an element is a pure substance, all atoms in an element are identical. Elements cannot be broken down
What does each of the rows/periods on a period table mean? All the elements in the row have similar properties.
What does each of the columns/groups of the periodic table mean? They react with other elements in a similar way
What does an elements atomic number represent? The number of protons and electrons in an element
What does the atomic mass number represent on an element? The number of protons added with the number of neutrons
What is a molecule? MoleculeĀ is used to describe any atoms that are chemical bonds
What is a compound? Compounds are substances made up of two or more different elements which chemically bonded
What is the difference between a compound and molecule? All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds
What is a mixture? Two or more pure substances that are mixed together and is physically combined
What are the indications of chemical change occuring? Change in Temperature, change in colour, noticeable odor, formation of a precipitate (solid), formation of bubbles (gas)
What are the indicators of a physical change occurring? Change of state of matter, mixing of substances, often reversable
What are the physical properties? Colour, texture, lustre, brittleness, solubility, polarity, elasticity, melting, boiling and freezing point and state of matter
What are chemical properties? Flammability, toxicity, radioactivity, oxidise, corrosive?
