Pre-Algebra Chapter 9 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Pythagorean Theorem in any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse (a^2 + b^2 = c^2)
Legs the sides in a right triangle that create the right angle
Hypotenuse the side in a right triangle across from the right angle (the longest side)
Rational Number a number that can be written as a/b where a and b are integers and b does not equal 0
Irrational Number a number that cannot be written as a ration of two integers
Square Root a number that, when multiplied by itself, equals a given number
Cube Root a number that, when cubed, equals a given number
Radical Symbol the symbol indicating a square or cube root (√)
