Motivating Operations

TermDefinition
Abative effect A decrease in the current frequency of behavior reinforced by a stimulus
Abolishing operation (AO) Temporarily decreases the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus and decreases the current frequency of behavior that has been reinforced by a stimulus
Behavior altering effect Alters the current frequency of behavior that has been reinforced by a stimulus
Conditioned motivating operation (CMO) A motivating operation whose value-altering effects depend on a learning history
Establishing effect (EO) Temporarily increases the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus and decreases the current frequency of behavior that has been reinforced by a stimulus
Evocative effect An increase in the current frequency of behavior reinforced by a stimulus
Function-altering effect the change in future frequency of a behavior due to past interaction A change in an organism’s repertoire of MO, stimulus, and response relations, caused by reinforcement, punishment, an extinction procedure, or recovery from a punishment procedure.
Motivation operation (MO) An environmental variable that (a) alters the reinforcing or punishing effectiveness of a stimulus, object or event; and (b) alters the current frequency of all behavior that has been reinforced or punished by that stimulus, object, or event
Reflexive conditioned motivating operation (CMO-R) A stimulus that acquires motivating properties by preceding some form of worsening or improvement
Reinforcer-abolishing effect A decrease in the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus, object, or event caused by a motivating operation
Reinforcer-establishing effect An increase in the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus, object, or event caused by a motivating operation
Surrogate conditioned motivating operation (CMO-S) A stimulus paired with another motivating operation that has the same value- and behavior-altering effects as that motivating operation
Transitive conditioned motivating operation (CMO-T) A stimulus in the context of which the value of another stimulus is altered as well as behaviors that have been reinforced by that other stimulus An environmental change that makes something else valuable as a reinforcer.
Unconditioned motivating operation (UMO) A motivating operation whose value altering effect does not depend on a learning
Value-altering effect Alters the effectiveness of a stimulus as a reinforcer

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
