| Proposition | the topic being debated |
| affirmative/defend | the team defending the proposition (agreeing) |
| negative/refute | the team refuting the proposition (disagreeing) |
| ethos | credibility and character of the speaker |
| pathos | appeals to emotions |
| logos | logic and reasong |
| ad homminem | an attack on the character of the opponent rather than the opponent's argument |
| bandwagon | relies on perceived or real popularity as reflective of fact |
| false authority | trusting a person despite the fact that their expertise lacks relevance and actual evidence |
| hasty generalization | making a claim based on insufficient evidence |
| straw man | this move oversimplifies an opponent's viewpoint and then attacks the new hollow argument |
| slippery slope | claiming that if A happens, eventually B, C, and D will happen, which leads to X, Y, and Z, so if we don't want Z, then A can't happen |
| no true scotsman | disregarding an opponent's point by claiming their example doesn't fit a definition you made up |
