QuestionAnswer
What 2 gases make up a small percentage of the composition of air AND are increasing significantly in ppm in the atmosphere? Carbon Dioxide, and Methane
What do these 2 gases in #1 do with energy from the sun and what does that do to the molecule? They absorb and trap the heat from the sun. They vibrate and collide with other molecules
Define greenhouse gases: Gases that trap heat in the Earths atmosphere, such as carbon Dioxide and Methane.
What are some examples of greenhouse gases? Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide
What is the greenhouse effect? the warming of the Earth's surface caused by the trapping of heat by greenhouse gasses.
Is the greenhouse effect good or bad for our Earth? Explain this. The greenhouse effect is a good thing because it keeps our planet warm enough to sustain life, but when the effect is intensified by humans it can harm our planet.
Define and give 3 types of fossil fuels. fossil fuels things such as coal, oil, and gas that are formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals.
What are some reasons why fossil fuels have increased in use since the 1600’s? Because the world started advancing by using new technology that needed something to fuel it such as coal, oil, and natural gasses.
What is a combustion reaction? a chemical process where a substance reacts with oxygen, releasing energy as heat and light.
Write the chemical formula for the combustion of fossil fuels in words. (reactants → products) fuel +oxygen, turns into, carbon dioxide + water + energy
How does this chemical formula for the combustion of fossil fuels relate to the law of conservation of mass? The total mass of thee reactants is equal to the total mass of the products
Draw the carbon cycle below and put a star next to the main areas in the cycle in the air, at the surface, or in the ground where carbon is given off or used. Use arrows to show the flow of where carbon moves to and from. THIS IS ON YOUR QUIZ! Correctly draw the front page of lesson 11
Where is a significant difference in the amount of gigatons in your carbon cycle drawing? Where is this coming from and how does it affect Earth? There is a significant difference between the gigatons of humans that need to fuel stuff and the gigatons of plants and animals. This is caused by humans doing harmful activities like burning fossil fuels. This makes the Earth's climate hotter.
What is the primary cause of droughts? lack of precipitation in a extended period of time
What is the order of these things? water vapor, precipitation, evaporation, humidity evaporation, water vapor, humidity, precipitation
What is the primary cause of floods? When there is a significant amount of precipitation in a certain area in a extended period of time
