CCMA Unit 4

TermDefinition
Otoscope An instrument used for visual examination of the eardrum & inner ear canal, typically having a light for visibility.
Ophthalmoscope An instrument used to examine the interior of the eye.
Parenteral Administered or occurring in the body bypassing the gastrointestinal tract.
Nonparenteral Given by mouth, delivered to the GI tract.
Otic Relating to the ear.
Ophthalmic Relating to the eye.
Allergic A condition of sensitivity in which the immune system reacts abnormally to a foreign substance.
Anaphylactic Shock A systemic allergic reaction that can be life threatening without immediate medical intervention.
Sterilization The complete destruction of ALL microorganisms through specific means .
Ampule Sealed glass capsule containing a liquid.
Food & Drug Administration Organization responsible for protecting the public health by ensuring safety, efficacy, & security of human medications.
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Record in a medical practice or clinic to document the pt’s demographic information, care, progress, & treatment.
Sterile Technique A group of strategies used to reduce exposure to microorganisms & keep the patient as safe as possible.
Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) Process in which providers enter & send treatment instructions, including medications, laboratory, & radiology orders, via a computer application rather than paper, fax, or phone.
