James Hutton Theory of Gradualism - Earth was shaped by geological forces occurring over very long periods of time (millions of years).
Charles Lyell Theory of Uniformitarianism - Geological processes of today are the same as the past
Malthus Helped with the idea od struggle for existence, hypothesized that eventually resources would run out in a growing population, causing competition Helped Darwin realize that not all individuals would not be supported and survive
Lamark Helped with the idea that organisms adapt to environment, proposed that environment change leads to use of disuse of a structure, inheritance of acquired
Alfred Wallace Independently from Darwin, he proposed the idea of evolution by natural selection. This gave Darwin incentive to publish his work
Charles Darwin Origin of Species, presented evidence and proposed a mechanism for evolution that he called natural selection, influenced by Mathus and concluded that if more individuals are produced than can survive, members of a population must compete
