Poll Tax A tax a person must pay in order to vote
Share Cropping system of farming in which a farmer works land for an owner who provides equipment and gets a share of the crop
Amnesty the granting of a pardon to a large group people
Black codes laws that aimed at controlling freed men and women, and letting plantation owners take advantage of African American workers in the south.
Impeach to formally change a public official with misconduct in office
Segregation separation of race, class, or group
Scalawag a name given by former confederates to southern whites who supported republican reconstruction in the south
Lynching putting to death by illegal action of a mob
Literacy Test method to prevent African Americans from voting by requiring voters to read and write at a specific level
Recontruction The period of rebuilding the south and readmitting the former confederates states into the union
Grandfather Clause part of the southern state constitutions after the civil war that placed high literacy and property requirements for voters whose dad and grandpa who didn't vote before
