What is the definition of Sectionalism? the deep divisions and conflicts between different regions of the United States, particularly the North and the South
What is the definition of Fugitive? an enslaved person who had escaped from their owner
What is the definition of Secede? to formally withdraw from a federation or union
What is the definition of Abstain? to choose not to do or have something
What is the definition of Popular Sovereignty? residents of a territory, not the federal government, should decide whether or not to allow slavery within their borders
What is the definition of Border ruffians? pro-slavery Missourians who crossed the border into Kansas Territory, primarily during the 1850s, to influence elections and ensure Kansas would enter the Union as a slave state
What is the definition of Arsenal? a place where weapons and military equipment were stored or manufactured
What is the definition of Secession? the withdrawal of eleven Southern states from the United States during 1860 and 1861
What is the definition of States rights? the belief that individual states should have significant control over their own affairs, including the power to nullify federal laws they deemed unconstitutional or to secede from the Union
What is the definition of Border state? slave-holding states that bordered free states but remained loyal to the Union
What is the definition of Blockade? the Union's naval strategy to prevent the Confederacy from importing supplies and exporting goods, primarily cotton, to other countries
What is the definition of Offensive? a strategic or tactical initiative aimed at gaining territory, achieving objectives, or disrupting the enemy
What is the definition of Rebel? soldiers and individuals loyal to the Confederate States of America
What is the definition of Yankee? a common term used by Southerners to refer to Northerners, specifically those who belonged to the Union cause
What is the definition of Blockade runner? a privately owned vessel, often a steamer, used by the Confederacy to smuggle goods through the Union naval blockade of Southern ports
What is the definition of Ironclad? a warship covered in iron or steel armor plates, designed to protect against enemy fire
What is the definition of Casualty? any person who is killed, wounded, captured, or missing during wartime activities
What is the definition of Emancipate? the act of freeing enslaved people
What is the definition of Ratify? the process of formally approving and confirming a document or agreement, especially in relation to constitutional amendments
What is the definition of Habeas corpus? suspended by President Lincoln to address national security concerns, allowing for the arrest and detention of individuals, including those suspected of treason or aiding the Confederacy, without the usual legal protections
What is the definition of Draft? conscription, or the mandatory draft
What is the definition of Bounty? a cash bonus offered by national, state, and local governments to encourage enlistments in the military
What is the definition of Greenback? a type of paper currency issued by the United States government to finance the war effort
What is the definition of Inflation? a sustained and significant increase in the general price level of goods and services within an economy
What is the definition of Entrenched? a defensive position secured by a trench or other earthworks, making it difficult to attack
What is the definition of Total war? the conflict is characterized by the mobilization of all available resources, the engagement of the entire population, and a focus on achieving complete victory, often at the expense of civilian populations and economic stability
