what is sociology? the social science that studies human society and social behavior.
what is social sciences? the disciplines that study human social behavior or institutions and functions of human society in a scientific manner.
what is social interaction? how people relate to one another and influence each other's behavior.
what is social Phenomena? observable facts or events that involve human society.
what is socioalogical perspective? looking beyond commonly held beliefs to the hidden meanings behind human actions.
what is sociological imagination? the ability to see the connection between the larger world and your personal life.
what is anthropology? the comparative study of past and present cultures.
what is psychology? the social science that deals with the behavior and thinking of organisms.
what is social psychology? the study of how the social enviornment affects an individuals behavior and personality.
what is political science? areas of mutual interest include voting patterns, the concentration of political power, and the information of politically based groups.
who is C. Wright Mills? C. Wright Mills is a sociologist who explained what a sociological imagination is.
what is History? the study of past events
who is Auguste Comte? he is considered the founder of sociology. He was one of the first scholars to use the methods of physical sciences to the study of social life.
Who is Herbert Spencer? was an English contemporary of Comte. He started out as a civil engineer for a railway company. When he was on his thirties, he inherited a lot of money. So insteadod working to earn money anymore he decided to pursue his interest in the study of society.
what is Social Darwinism? Herbert Spencer's similar ideas to Charles Darwin's "survival of the fittest".
Who is Karl Marx? He was unable to get a teaching job because of his political views. The same reason why the government closed the newspaper place he worked at. He then moved to Paris to be in a more liberal atmosphere. But the Prussian Goverment made Paris expel him.
Who is Emile Durkheim? A frenchman who was educated in France and Germany. In his late 20s he was accepted to a teaching position at the University of Bordeaux in France. In France he developed the country's first university sociology course.
what is a function? the consequence that an element of society produces for the maintenance of its social system.
Who is Max Weber? He got his doctoral degree from the university of Berlin. He later had a teaching position at the same University. He later became a professor of economics at the University of Heidelberg.
what is Verstehen? an attempt to understand the meaning of individuals attach to their actions.
what is an Ideal Type? a description comprised of the essential characteristics of a feature of society.
What is a theory? an explanation of the relationships among particular phenomena.
What are theoretical perspectives? a general set of assumptions about the nature of phenomena.
What is a functionalist perspective? theoretical perspectives that views society as a set of interrelated parts that work together to produse a stable social system.
What is dysfunctional? the negative consequence an element has for the stability of the social system.
what is a manifest fuction? the intended and recognized consequence of some element of society.
