| Personification | giving human attributes and/or emotions to a thing or idea |
| Onomatopoeia | a type of word that suggests the sound it describes (ex: bang, boom, slurp) |
| Oxymoron | a word or group of words that contradicts itself (ex: humblebrag, bittersweet) |
| Hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration that emphasizes a point (ex: I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse). |
| Imagery | a description of something that appeals to the five senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell) |
| Alliteration | when two or more words begin with the same letter and/or sound (ex: Hedgehogs hog the hedge). |
| Repetition | repeating a word or phrase multiple times to emphasize it (ex: Run, run, run, as fast as you can). |
| Symbolism | an object, person, or place that has a meaning within itself but stands for something else in the context of a passage |
| Figurative Language | words or phrases that are meaningful, but not literally true; often to vividly convey a particular image or theme |
| Tone | the attitude the author takes on a subject or audience |
| Theme | the author's message to the reader |
