Part C: Mitosis

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 stages of interphase? The 3 stages of interphase are Growth Phase 1 (G1), Synthesis Phase (S), and Growth Phase (G2). During G1, the cell is growing and developing organelles. Synthesis phase, the chromosomes inside the nucleus duplicate. During G2 cell continues to grow
What are the 4 stages of mitosis what is happening in the cell? Mitosis happens when the cell is multiplying into 2. The 4 stages are Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telaphase.
What is happening during Prophase? During Prophase, the nuclear envelope is starting to disappear and the centrioles move to opposite poles . Chromosomes are starting to coil up
What is happening during Metaphase? During Metaphase, the spindle fibers attach to the chromosome(centromeres) and line them up in the middle.
What is happening during Anaphase? During Anaphase, the spindle fibers retract and pull half of the chromosomes toward each centriole.
What is happening during Telophase? During Telophase, the spindle fibers go back into the centriole and the nuclear envelope starts to form back around both sets of chromosomes.
What are the 3 major cell checkpoints? G1 it will check if there is enough nutrients to support growth. 2nd checkpoint is during synthesis to see whether the chromosomes replicated or if theres damage. 3rd is to see if all the chromosomes are attached to the spindle fibers before Anaphase.
What is Cytokinesis? Cytokinesis is when the cell is dividing and the cell membrane pinches off in the middle and separates into 2 identical daughter cells.
What is Apoptosis? Apoptosis happens when cells die when it is too old or unable to function
What are cancer cells and how do they come to be? Cancer cells can go through mitosis unlimitedly compared to a normal cell that can only go through it 50-60 times. Does not function normally, its DNA is mutated due to a mutagen such as smoking. Happens when the nucleotide code switches. (codon)
What are tumors? Tumors are clumps of cells due to the urge to divide.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
