What were the beliefs of the "moderates"? Reform, rather than complete independence. Have Britain change some of the laws put on them and stay the same
What were the beliefs of the extremists? Total independence, get rid of Britain
What is a Raj? The name given to British colonial rule over India
What was the British East India Company (BEIC)? A trading company that dominated trade and commerce over India, soon led to the colonization of India
Who became India's first prime minister after gaining independence? Jawaharlal Nehru
What kinds of things happened after India gained independence? Hindus and Muslims began to fight over what territory they own, and eventually divide into different lands
Who initiated the Amritsar massacre? British colonel Reginald Dyer
What was the BEIC's purpose? Trade with India
What did moderates in the INC want? Political reforms
What was the INC? The Indian National Congress
How does India gain its independence? India became too expensive for the British to control
What was the purpose of the Salt March? A way of civil disobedience towards the British government where Gandhi's followers marched to illegally steal salt
What is celibacy? Abstaining from marriage/sexual relations
What things did Gandhi give up in order to fight for India's independence? Marriage, family/social relations, clothing that wasn't traditional
Why is Kashmir still disputed between India and Pakistan? It was technically touching both Hindu and Muslim territory, and they never got through the dispute
Which dynasty controlled India before the BEIC arrived? The Mughal
What was the Muslim League? The part of the INC that split off to safeguard the rights of Indian Muslims.
Who led the Muslim League? Mohammed Ali Jinnah
Why did Gandhi go on a "pilgrimage of peace"? It was his way of peacefully protesting the partitioning of India
What was satyagraha? The idea of civil disobedience - peacefully disobeying the government to show disobeyment and protest
What did Naoroji advocate for? Peaceful protest to gain independence from Britain
Who made the borders for India and Pakistan when it was partitioned? Cyril Radcliffe, British official
What is a princely state? A semi-independent region led by an indigenous ruler
Who killed Gandhi? A Hindu extremist
What did Tilak advocate for? A "new party" that has total independence. They would gain that with violence and not-peaceful protests
What is the metaphor with knives and sugar mean? The sugar was the benefits of the BEIC, the knife was the negatives
What is a viceroy? British official in control of the Parliament and supported by a civil service.
Why did sepoys distrust the BEIC around 1857? Part of their gun's material was made of cow/pig fat, which to eat was extremely against their religion.
What was Sepoy Mutiny (rebellion)? After their arrest for not loading their guns, the sepoys went on a killing spree thus starting the rebellion. British won
What happens after the Sepoy Rebellion? BEIC is now in direct control of India and the Queen is crowned Empress of India
What were some benefits to British control over India? Better education, old traditions die out, newer innovative technology like railroads and telegraph, better living qualities
What were some negatives to British control over India? Economic crises destroying native businesses and industries, taxation, famine
What were the Rowlatt acts? Acts passed after Indians fought for Britain in WWI that restricted the freedom of Indians
What did most of the INC believe in? They were mostly moderate and supported the idea that India needed reforms, not complete independence
Who was Henry David Thoreau? A man who had similar ideas to Gandhi about satyagraha but thought them up many years prior.
