What is a mechanical digestion? Mechanical digestion is the physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces, like chewing and stomach churning.
What is a chemical digestion? Chemical digestion is the breakdown of food into simpler nutrients using enzymes and acids, so the body can absorb them
Two organs that perform chemical digestion Stomach and small intestine
The role of pancreas in digestion The pancreas makes enzymes to digest food and neutralizes stomach acid
Where does most food absorption into the blood happen? Small intestine
Why are digestive enzymes necessary? they break down food into small molecules that the body can absorb and use.
First step of Digestion Mouth – chewing and saliva start digestion
Second step of Digestion Esophagus – moves food to the stomach
Third step of Digestion Stomach – mixes food and starts breaking it down
Fourth step of Digestion Small intestine – digestion continues and nutrients are absorbed
Fifth step of Digestion Large intestine – water is absorbed
Sixth step of Digestion Rectum and anus – waste is stored and then removed from the body
