Data & Statistics

TermDefinition
absolute value How far a number is from zero.
attribute A property of an object or person. Something you can say it has (such as size or color).
box plot (box and whisker) A diagram that shows the five number summary of a distribution (lowest value, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, and highest value).
cluster When data seems to be "gathered" around a particular value.
data a collection of facts, measurement, or value
distribution The arrangement of data values showing their frequency of occurrence.
dot plot (line plot) A graphical display of data using dots on a number line.
frequency How many pieces of data that are in each interva
histogram A graphical display of data. The data is grouped into ranges and then plotted as bars.
interquartile range The difference between the upper and lower quartiles in a data set
MAD : mean absolute deviation the absolute difference between an element of a data set and a given point.
mean (average) The average number in a set of data. Calculate by adding up the numbers, then dividing by how many numbers there are.measures of center
measures of center Numbers that are used to describe the center of a set of data; these measures include the mean, median, and mode
median The middle number of a set of data when the numbers are arranged from least to greatest, or the mean of two middle numbers when the set of data has two middle numbers.
mode The number which appears most often in a set of data.
outlier A value much greater or much less than the others in the data set
pattern Things that are arranged following a rule or rules
plot To draw on a graph or map.
Quantitative Data that can be counted or measured.
Quartile 1 The middle value of the data that's less than the median. Also known as the Lower Quartile.
Quartile 2 The median
Quartile 3 The middle value of the data that's greater than the median. Also known as the Upper Quartile.
Quartiles Values that divide a data set into 4 equal parts; each part represents 25% of the data
range The difference between the highest and lowest values in a set of data.
spread describes the variability of a data set, that is, how the data is spread out and varies from the mean. (includes the range)
statistics the study of collecting, analyzing, and presenting data.
symmetric distribution Data that are evenly distributed; the values above and below the median are very similar.
Variability How data points differ from each other. Range and Mean are common ways to measure variability of data.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
