Circulatory System

Circulatory System Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
Atrium/ Atria The left and right upper chambers of the heart
Ventricle(s) The left and right lower chambers of the heart
Capillaries The smallest blood vessels where oxygen/nutrients are exchanged with body cells
Carbon Dioxide A waste gas carried by the blood back to the lungs for exhalation
Oxygen The gas that red blood cells deliver to the body's tissues
Plasma The fluid part of blood that carries cells and nutrients
Platelets Tiny blood components that help in clotting
Red Blood Cells These cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body
Veins Blood vessels that return blood back to the heart
White Blood Cells These cells help the body fight infections and diseases
