What is psychoanalysis? A method of treating mental disorders, emphasis on revealing unconscious conflicts. (interaction b/w the conscious and unconscious mind, bringing repressed conflicts into the conscious mind)
What are techniques of psychoanalysis? Dream interpretation, Free association, Resistance and transference
What is dream interpretation? An analysis of the elements in dreams. It can have both manifest and latent content.
What is manifest content? The actual details of the dream and events
What is latent content? The symbolic or hidden meaning behind the dream
What is free association? Freely speaking without any fear of consequences
What is resistance and transference? When the patient is unwilling to say everything they feel (resistance) and unconsciously projecting feelings, behaviors, and reactions onto therapist as if they were their significant other or parental figure
What is interpersonal psychotherapy? Its goal is to understand mood in everyday life and interactions. It incorporates multiple approaches and focuses on interpersonal problems
Interpersonal psychotherapy is typically used to treat.. depression
What are some techniques of interpersonal psychotherapy? Role playing, cognitive restructuring, positive reinforcement, mindfulness, grounding and breath regulation, and guided imagery (re-scripting)
What are some of the results from the evaluation of psychoanalytic therapies? 1. Freud's theory is flawed and only a few people use his methods 2. The modern approach suggests a more directive and client centered approach 3. It focuses on shorter treatments and emphasize transference 4. It is useful in treating depression
