Why are safety goggles more effective than safety glasses? glasses provide protection against splashed chemicals and fumes but not explosions. Vented goggles are adequate PPE
How long should you rinse your eyes at eyewash stations? 15 minutes at least
What is considered appropriate PPE? long sleeve shirt, long pants, socks, leather shoes, a lab coat/apron, (short sleeved shirts or tennis shoes are acceptable)
Can you wear gloves outside of the lab? no you must take off gloves and wash hands before leaving the lab.
How long should a safety shower be used? 15 minutes
What is the process for using a fire extinguisher? (PASS) P-pull the pin A- aim at base of the fire S-squeeze the handle S- sweep the nozzle back and forth at base of fire
Are food a drink allowed in the lab? no
What is an SDS sheet? safety data sheet, provides information regarding the hazards associated with using specific chemicals
On SDS what do the specific colors represent? Red-flammability blue-health yellow-chemical reactivity white-special hazards
What does a dead tree and fish in water surrounded by a red diamond border represent? environmental hazard
What does the skull and crossbones with a red diamond boarder represent? deadly hazards/toxic
what does the liquid in a test tube being poured out onto a surface and onto a hand surrounded by a red diamond represent? corrosive
What does the flame with jagged edges within a red diamond border represent? flammable
What does the exclamation mark within a red diamond boarder represent? health risk
What is a reagent bench? place where reagents are stored
Can acids bases and other major classes of chemicals be kept together? no they must be stored separately
When should safety goggles be worn in the lab? who should be wearing them? Always, everyone
What precautions are needed with long hair and beards? Keep long hair tied back/keep hair away from flames.
Which technique is recommended for determining the odor of an unknown liquid in the lab? Use a hand to fan some of the vapor from the test tube to the nose and inhale.
Where can information regarding specific chemical safety be found? SDS
In order to safely handle dry ice, what kind of personal protective equipment should you use? insulated gloves
A student fills a beaker with a solid material then uses roughly half of the material in an experiment. After the lab period is over, what should be done with the remaining unused material? Dispose of the material in the proper waste container.
