Heredity & Genetic Variation

asexual reproduction the reproductive process in which a single cell makes a copy of itself
genetic variation a difference in inherited characteristics between parent and offspring
inherited trait a characteristic that is passed from parent to offspring
variation different forms or varieties of something
sexual reproduction the reproductive process involving two parents whose genetic material is combined to produce a new organism that is different from themselves
alleles different variations of a specific gene (such as eye color)
genotype the pair of alleles that an organism inherits for each gene (Bb, for example)
phenotype the final outward appearance of a trait (bb would result in blue eyes)
dominant allele shows up if present and is represented by a capital letter
recessive allele might be covered up and is represented by a lowercase letter
genes factors that control traits
homozygous both alleles are the same; for example: BB or bb
heterozygous Alleles are different; for example Bb
