Heredity & Genetic Variation

| asexual reproduction | the reproductive process in which a single cell makes a copy of itself |
| genetic variation | a difference in inherited characteristics between parent and offspring |
| inherited trait | a characteristic that is passed from parent to offspring |
| variation | different forms or varieties of something |
| sexual reproduction | the reproductive process involving two parents whose genetic material is combined to produce a new organism that is different from themselves |
| alleles | different variations of a specific gene (such as eye color) |
| genotype | the pair of alleles that an organism inherits for each gene (Bb, for example) |
| phenotype | the final outward appearance of a trait (bb would result in blue eyes) |
| dominant allele | shows up if present and is represented by a capital letter |
| recessive allele | might be covered up and is represented by a lowercase letter |
| genes | factors that control traits |
| homozygous | both alleles are the same; for example: BB or bb |
| heterozygous | Alleles are different; for example Bb |
