| Terraced houses | Row of houses next to the other |
| Detached houses | Houses which stand on their own |
| Semi-detached houses | Houses which have one wall in common |
| Bungalow | A small one-storey house |
| Cottage | A small house in the country wiht a thatched roof (rieten dak) |
| Block of flats/building/skyscraper | Building which includes several apartments |
| Maisonette | A small flat/studio |
| Bed-sitting room | A Furnished sitting room with sleeping accomodations |
| Penthouse | Apartment situated on the roof of a building |
| Villa | Very expensive type of housing quite some land goes with it. |
| Palace | Official residence of a royal family and/or their close relatives. |
| Abbey | Dwelling originally used by monks or nuns, later on were many of these buildings turned into a sort of a castle. |
| Castle | Dwellings origrinally built as means to defend a particular town etc. As a result they often have towers. |
| Mansion | A stately home for rich people. |
| Manor | A large private house and land in the country usually going back to the Middle Ages |
| Cabin | A small house usually made of wood in a wooded or mountinous area. |
| Dig | Room rented by students who do not wish to cimmute. |
| Front/Back garden | Voor/Achtertuin |
| The chimney | Schoorsteen of fireplace |
| Driveway | Oprit |
| The garage | Garage |
| The lawn | Gazon |
| A hedge | (haag) Iron /Wooden fence (hek) with a gate (poort) |
| A shed | To put the garden tools in (schuur) |
| A greenhouse | To grow flowers or vegetables (serre) |
| A veranda | In front of house = porch |
| A multi- storey car park | Parking met meerdere verdiepingen |
| Car park | Open air car parking with multiple parking spaces |
| An industrial estate/ Industrial area/ zone | Zone with factories, mills firms (industriezone) |
| A housing estate | Zone where people live in council houses (sociale woonwijk) these houses usuallt look exactlu the same. |
| A residential area | More luxurious houses (woonwijk) |
| A shopping centre | (winkelcentrum) contains a lot of shops and restaurants |
| A power station/plant | (electric or nuclear) provides power |
| Suburb | Voorstad/randgemeente |
| The outskirts | buitenwijken |
